Windows Registry: ( What it is How to Open, and Edit It)

Registry in Windows
Windows Registry: What it is & what it’s used for and how to edit and clean windows registry. Here we tell everything in detail.

The windows registry is a hierarchical database that contains all of the configurations and setting used by components and services and applications and pretty much everything windows. The registry has two basic concepts to be aware of [keys and values]

  • Keys are objects that are folders, and in the interface even look exactly like folders.
  •  Values are a bit like the files in the folders and they contain the actual setting.

Windows Registry What is?

If you have used software in windows or any operating system, then you must have known that all those software also have some important data and that important data needs to be saved somewhere. As setting all software has its setting, some are themes, some are image resources and some are important location and path addresses, there is the version of the software and there are many other types of information that software needs.

it is necessary that such information of any software, where the address and references are kept, we know that place in windows by the name of a registry, this data place is kept in tree structure another folder inside the folder, just like in our file manager.

The default setting and references of windows are kept in this database, apart from this information related to the operating system and hardware-related information is also kept in this database registry.

[A registry is a group of some folders, which we also call root key or hive names, different types of folders are created to keep different types of information, for example, if the operating system has to know about the file extension and software. If you want to keep information about the setting, then both will be kept in separate folders.]

We can also read the registry and write if needed. In its early days, windows used to use [ini] system information file to keep system information but was not a good way, so now the registry is used, although in files are still used for different tasks.

Registry root keys names

When first opening the windows registry editor it displays root keys that contain all registry values.

  Root keys  Description
HKEY_ classes rootWindows uses this section to manage file type associations and it is usually abbreviated HKCR when being referenced in the documentation. This key is just a link to HKLM/Software/Classes.
HKEY_current userHolds the user setting for the currently logged-in user and is usually abbreviated HKCU_USERS/<SID-FOR-CURRENT-USER>. The most important subkey here is HKCU/ software which contains a user-level setting for most of your software.
HKEY_ local MachineAll system-wide settings are stored here, and it is usually abbreviated as HKLM. You will mostly use the HKLM/ software key to check machine-wide settings.
HKEY_ USERSThe stores of all the settings for all users on the system. You will typically use HKCU instead, but if you need to check settings for another user on your computer, you can use this one.
HKEY_ CurrentThe stores all of the information about the current hardware configuration. This one is not used very often and it is just alike to HKLM/SYSTEM/Current Control Set/ Hardware/Profile/ Current

Creating New Keys and Values

Right-clicking on any key in the left-hand side of the windows will give you a set of options most of which are fairly straight for word and easy to understand.

Valuesdescription
String value[REG_SZ] The contains anything that will fit into a regular string. The vast majority of the time you can edit human-readable string, without breaking everything.
Binary value [EG_BINARY]This value contains arbitrary binary data and you will rarely want to attempt to edit one of these keys.
DWORD[32-bit]value [REG_DWORD]These are almost always used for a regular integer value, whether just 0 or 1 or a number from 0to 4,294,967,295.
QWORD[64-bit]value [REG_QWORD]These are not used very often for registry hacking purposes, but it is a 64-bit integer value.
Multi-string value [REG_MULTI_SZ]These values are fairly uncommon but they work basically like a notepad window. You can type multi-line textual information into a field like this.
Expandable string value [REG_EXPAND_SZ]These variables have a string that can contain environment variables and is often used for system paths. So a string might be %system drive %\windows and would expand to c:\windows.in this registry that is set to this type you can change or insert environment variables and they will be [expanded] before the string is used.
