How to clean up disk space on Windows 11 There are several ways to clean up disk space on a Windows 11 computer. Some methods require you to manually delete files you don’t need. Free Up space using the in-built Clean Manager
- Launch the Run Command prompt on your Windows 11 PC by using the Windows + R shortcut.’
- Now type cleanmgr in the text box and hit the enter key on your keybpard.
- This will open a clean manager window on the screen. Now choose the disk drive you want to clean up using the drop down.
- Here we have chosen the ‘C’ drive. Now press the Ok button.
- As soon as you will do it, Windows will look for the junk files that are occupying the disk space of your Windows 11 PC. This will take up a considerable amount of time.
- Now you will see a pop-up on your screen that will display all the unwanted files. To allow Windows 11 to delete these junk files, press the ‘Clean up system files’ button at the bottom
- You can also choose the ‘Windows Installation’ and ‘Windows Update Clean Up’ folders to clean these folder in the pop-up menu.
- You will also see other folders in the list, you can check their boxes if you do not require them now.
- After you have selected all the unwanted folders, press the button at the bottom.
Note: If you choose to delete the System files, you can only downgrade to Windows 11 if you have a USB drive with the OS.
Free up space using Windows 11 Settings
To clean up all the junk files, go to the Windows 11 settings. You can do so using the Windows+I shortcut.
Next, click on the System tab on the left navigation pane and then click on the Storage button on the left.
Next, click on the Temporary files button.
When you will do so, Windows 11 will examine your disk drive; this will take a while. Now Windows 11 will display all the folders that are useless and you can free up space after deleting them.
In the list, you can uncheck all the folders that are important to you. Moreover, if you do not want any folder on your Windows 11 PC anymore, you have to make sure that the check box preceding it is checked.
For example, you can uncheck the Pictures folder as it may contain your personal photos. Similarly, you would not want to delete the Downloads folder.
On the other hand, make sure to select the ‘Previous Windows Installation’ and ‘Windows Update Clean-up’ folders in the folders list you want to be deleted. This is so these two folders take up most of your PC space.
After you are satisfied with your selection, hit the ‘Remove Files’ button.
When these files and folders are deleted, you will see that a large chunk of space will be created on your Windows 11 PC.
Empty the Recycle Bin folder to free up space
You might be aware that when we delete any file or folder from your Windows 11 PC, it doesn’t get deleted forever, it goes into the Recycle Bin instead. Over time, the number of these trashed files and folders increase and these junk files occupy a huge junk of memory.
If you forgot to empty the recycle bin folder, all your deleted files are still in the recycle bin folder. So it’s recommended to empty the recycle bin from time to time to free up disk space on Windows 11 PC. Follow the steps here to do it:
Go to the Windows 11 desktop and you will find the Recycle Bin folder here.
Open the Recycle bin context menu by right-clicking the Recycle bin icon.
Here click on the Empty Recycle Bin option.
When you will do it, a pop-up will appear on your PC asking you to confirm deleting these files. Press yes to delete all the files here forever.
