When you work on the computer and take a break for a while, you must have noticed that your computer screen turns off automatically, then when you come back, you either move the mouse or the keyboard.  When you press any key, your computer gets turned on.  We all know it from sleep mode but you must have also seen hibernate mode in laptop. 

 If you are working and you want when your computer goes to sleep mode and when you turn on again, your programs start from where you left, then in such case power to the computer or any other device The saving option is beneficial, which saves both time and power.

There are two options in Windows called Sleep and Hibernate, with the help of which you can save power as well as save time.  But there is a lot of difference between these two options which most of the users do not know.

Sleep mode

Sleep is an option provided to reopen the windows where you left them.  When you set your PC to sleep by pressing the Windows key, X followed by U and S, directly select the Windows icon and press the Sleep option to sleep in Windows.  At this point, the Alt and f4 options are closing the currently running window application.  Sleep mode is the suspended mode of RAM.  The laptop runs on battery when the lid is closed.  It automatically goes into sleep mode.  In 1621 the IEEE implements the symbol for sleep mode.

If your system has many applications running in the background then it takes more time to sleep which causes more damage to RAM.  The machine goes to sleep by default.  It is easier to open the sleeping system when you turn off the laptop than to shut down the machine.  Pressing any button on the computer will open the computer from sleep mode.  But your keyboard and mouse will not allow the system to open in sleep mode in some options.

Sometimes a hardware failure of the computer is a possible reason why the machine does not open immediately after sleeping mode.  It advises you to shut down the system if you do not use your laptop during the 10-minute break.  Forced shutdown affects the solid-state drive of the system.  The system receives more stress when you keep the machine in sleep for a longer period.  Sleeping mode changes the operating system.  Standing by and suspended sleeping modes are other names.

Hibernate mode

This option is designed for laptops and is not available for all computers.  Hibernate mode is similar to sleep mode, but all open documents and applications are stored on the hard disk instead of in RAM.  This can completely shut down the laptop, which means that once you put the laptop in hibernate mode, it does not use power.  Then when the laptop is powered on, it resumes all open applications and documents as soon as it is powered on because that data is stored on the hard disk.  If you do not go to work on the laptop for a long time, but at the same time you do not want to close the documents. Then use hibernate mode.

These are disadvantage of hibernate mode is that it takes up a lot of disk space, as all the data in ram is stored on the hard disk.  You can find out how much space is used in hibernate by the size of the hiberfil. Sys file in the root folder of the system drive.  The second disadvantage is that it takes longer to resume when switched back on from hibernate mode as compared to sleep mode.

Sleep Mode vs Hibernate Mode

The main difference between sleep and hibernate is their power consumption.

  • Sleep mode uses some amount of power to store documents and files in the ram.
  • Hibernate mode consumes no energy, and it saves on the hard disk.
  •  Sleep mode takes some time to reopen compared to Hibernate.
  •  Hibernate mode takes less time to open windows.  They store data in different places, which makes a difference in power consumption.
  •  Sleep mode is one such option that consumes very little power.
  • Sleep mode stores the documents and files where you left off in RAM and sleep mode uses very little power.
  •  Hibernate mode consumes less power as compared to Sleep.
  • Sleep mode computer and laptop to Power charging is more harmful to a sleeping computer.
  • Hibernate works just like sleep but, it is stored in a hard disk which does not use energy
  •  The idle computer produces more heat than the machine at full shutdown.
  •   Sleep is the primary option for both the system and the laptop.
  •  Hibernate is nothing but a way to make a trade-off between hard disk performance and power consumption
  •  Sleep is the pausing state of the system.  Sleep reduces the power of unwanted applications.  Most laptops go to sleep by default when the system is turned off without shutdown.
  • Hibernate is a functional power-consuming option provided by Microsoft.
  • This shows negative implications for computers with solid-state drives (SSDs).  In simple, Hibernate compresses and stores data on the hard disk.

Conclusion

It is important to turn it off at least once a week for the best performance of your system.  It is not a good idea to keep the computer and laptop always sleeping or hibernating.  Both hibernate and sleep will help to reopen those windows there was left working idle consumes some energy to save your documents and files.
