If you didn’t know it already, the beard is the best fashion accessory a man has at his disposal – this is a fact! It can be trimmed, shaped or grown into any conceivable shape that our faces will accommodate. Most of us guys however prefer a simple and straight-forward beard, somewhere between a Colin Farrell shadow and a Santa Claus shrubbery. It has become more acceptable these days to sport what I call a weekend-beard (two-day stubble) all week long. Gone are the days when a clean shave was required as a dress code for work, its time to embrace your manly face fur!

Beard trimmer features

There are a huge amount of electric beard trimmers on the market, most of which offer some kind of innovative deal-breaking technology. Should you go for titanium or ceramic blades? Should it be rechargeable? Can you use it in the shower? As a person who has used beard and hair trimmers for the last 20 years, there is one feature I have always longed for: A Shaver that cleans up its own mess.

Unfortunately, such a device doesn’t exist. However, I have found the next best thing. Let me introduce you to my latest favourite gadget – The Philips QT4075 Vacuum Stubble and Beard Trimmer Pro. As its name suggests, this particular beard-trimmer has a vacuum function. The trimmed hair is sucked into a compact little chamber that can be easily emptied with minimal mess (think miniature lawn-mower).

I will be brutally honest with you here, the vacuum doesn’t catch all the hair but it does a fantastic job trying. Somewhere between 10-20% of shavings escape which is very little indeed. This means you can now trim that beard in places that don’t provide a sink. Obviously the vacuum is the main feature of this device, but there are a few extra surprises that might get you reaching for your wallet.

The trimmer is fitted with a Lithium-ion battery that requires only 60 minutes to fully charge the unit. A quick 7 minute charge will provide enough juice for a single shave if the battery is dead and you are in a hurry.

As you would expect from a modern beard-trimmer, the blades require no oiling or sharpening at all. There are 19 trim lengths in total, 0.5mm (without the comb attachment) and 1mm to 18mm (with attachment). Cutting lengths are displayed via an LCD panel along with information about battery power. The trimmer also comes with an impressive two year worldwide manufacturer’s guarantee.
